Your Guide To (The Many, Many) Sci-Fi And Fantasy TV Premieres And Returns In October

The Fall season launched in September with over a dozen returns and premieres, but things really kick into gear in October. At current count there are 23 (!) shows returning to the schedule or starting their freshman seasons this month, and that means you have quite a lot of  and  shows to pick from. Below is a rundown of the October entries and you can see the full Fall schedule here. October 1st

Ghosted – Series Premiere

  • Airs: FOX, Sundays 8:30 PM EST
  • Starring: Craig Robinson, Adam Scott, Ally Walker
  • About: This paranormal comedy series follows a skeptic and a “true believer” tasked by the mysterious organization known as the Bureau Underground to investigate unexplained cases in the Los Angeles area.

Extinct – Series Premiere

  • Airs: BYU TV, Sundays 9 PM EST
  • Starring: Chad Michael Collins, Victoria Atkin, Jaclyn Hales, Yorke Fryer
  • About: This show comes from Orson Scott Card (Ender’s Game) and follows a group of humans revived from extinction by aliens who want to rebuild human civilization.

The Last Man on Earth – Season 4 Premiere

  • Airs: FOX, Sundays 9:30 PM EST
  • Starring: Will Forte, Kristen Schaal, January Jones, Mel Rodriguez
  • About: FOX’s post-apocalyptic comedy returns for its fourth season as the group of survivors continue to try and find their way in a virus-ravaged world while also struggling to coexist.

October 2nd

Lucifer – Season 3 Premiere

  • Airs: FOX, Mondays 8 PM EST
  • Starring: Tom Ellis, Lesley-Ann Brandt, Lauren German, Kevin Alejandro, Trisha Helfer
  • About: The television adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Lucifer continues to find the former King of Hell poking around Los Angeles because he grew tired of his day job.

The Gifted – Series Premiere

  • Airs: Mondays 9 PM EST
  • Starring: Stephen Moyer, Amy Acker, Jamie Chung, Blair Redford
  • About: In this X-Men spin-off series, two human parents discover that their children are mutants and the family must go on the run from government agents trying to contain them.

October 3rd

Kevin (Probably) Saves the World – Series Premiere

  • Airs: ABC, Tuesdays 10 PM EST
  • Starring: Jason Ritter, JoAnna Garcia Swisher, India de Beaufort
  • About: A man’s life changes when a mysterious “celestial being” appears before him and gives him a mission to save the world.

October 5th

Van Helsing – Season 2 Premiere

  • Airs: Syfy, Thursdays 9 PM EST
  • Starring: Kelly Overton, Jonathan Scarfe, Christopher Heyerdahl, Paul Johansson
  • About: The vampire-pocalypse continues (well, not the one from FX’s The Strainbecause that series just ended), and Vanessa Helsing continues the legacy of her family as she tries to wipe out the blood suckers that have overrun the planet.

Ghost Wars – Series Premiere

  • Airs: Syfy, Thursdays 10 PM EST
  • Starring: Vincent D’Onofrio, Kim Coates, Avan Jogia, Kristin Lehman, Meatloaf
  • About: In a remote Alaskan town, a man must learn to harness his repressed psychic powers to save the inhabitants from a mass haunting.

October 6th

Once Upon A Time – Season 7 Premiere

  • Airs: ABC, Fridays 8 PM EST
  • Starring: Lana Parrilla, Robert Carlyle, Colin O’Donoghue, Andrew J. West, Gabrielle Anwar
  • About: In the seventh season of this fantasy series, the Evil Queen, Captain Hook and Rumpelstiltskin team up with a grown-up Henry Mills on a dangerous quest that may be the only hope for their world and ours.

Superstition – Series Premiere

  • Airs: Syfy, Fridays 10 PM EST
  • Starring: Mario Van Peebles, W. Earl Brown, Demetria McKinney, Diamond Dallas Page
  • About: The Hastings family owns a funeral home in the town of La Rochelle and has a special talent for battling evil from beyond the grave.

October 9th

Supergirl – Season 3 Premiere

  • Airs: The CW, Mondays 8 PM EST
  • Starring: Melissa Benoist, Mehcad Brooks, Chyler Leigh, Jeremy Jordan, David Harewood
  • About: Kara Zor-El, cousin of Kal El, continues her adventures in National City, living the life of a reporter while also protecting the city as Supergirl.

October 10th

The Flash – Season 4 Premiere

  • Airs: The CW, Tuesdays 8 PM EST
  • Starring: Grant Gustin, Candice Patton, Danielle Panabaker, Rick Cosnett, Carlos Valdes
  • About: The adventures of the Flash continue as Barry Allen protects Central City with his powers of speed assisted by the unlikely group of heroes he has assembled.

Legends of Tomorrow – Season 3 Premiere

  • Airs: The CW, Tuesdays 9 PM EST
  • Starring: Victor Garber, Brandon Routh, Arthur Darvill, Caity Lotz, Franz Drameh
  • About: Rip Hunter returns in this show’s third season and the Legends find themselves at odds with the Time Master when faced with the fact that Julius Caesar has been unleashed on the modern day world

October 11th

The Shannara Chronicles – Season 2 Premiere

  • Airs: Spike, Wednesdays 10 PM EST
  • Starring: Ivana Baquero, Manu Bennett, Austin Butler, John Rhys-Davies
  • About: This fantasy series based on the Terry Brooks Shannara books moves to Spike in its second season and continues the story of the battle against the demon army that threatens the Four Lands

Mr. Robot – Season 3 Premiere

  • Airs: USA, Wednesdays 10 PM EST
  • Starring: Rami Malek, Carly Chaikin, Portia Doubleday, Christian Slater
  • About: This show returns for its third season as super-hacker Elliot must deal with the moral quandaries of how best to use his abilities.

October 12th

Supernatural – Season 13 Premiere

  • Airs: The CW, Thursdays 8 PM EST
  • Starring: Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Mark Pellegrino, Misha Collins
  • About: This show is back for its record-busting thirteenth season as Sam and Dean must decide what to do about Lucifer’s newly born son. Also, they will be teaming up with Scooby Doo later in the year (no really).

Arrow – Season 6 Premiere

  • Airs: The CW, Thursday 9 PM EST
  • Starring: Stephen Amell, Katie Cassidy, Colin Donnell, David Ramsey, Willa Holland
  • About: Oliver Queen continues to fight crime as the Arrow with the team of heroes he has assembled, but he must sort through the wreckage of Lian Yu to find out who survived.

October 13th

The Punisher – Series Premiere

  • Streams: Netflix
  • Starring: Jon Bernthal, Ben Barnes, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Amber Rose Revah
  • About: This spin-off from Netflix’s Daredevil follows the vigilante assassin known as The Punisher who fights crime by any means necessary.

October 14th

Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency – Season 2 Premiere

  • Airs: BBC American, Saturdays 9 PM EST
  • Starring: Samuel Barnett, Elijah Wood
  • About: Douglas Adams’ famous detective who believes in the inter-connectedness of all things continues his adventures in the second season of this television series.

October 16th

Star Wars: Rebels – Season 4 Premiere

  • Airs: Disney XD, Mondays 8:30 PM EST
  • Starring: Freddie Prinze, Jr., Taylor Gray, Tiya Sircar, Steven Blum, Vanessa Marshall
  • About: This Star Wars animated series returns for its fourth and final season as the Rebellion finds itself in desperate times while the Empire closes in on the resistance forces.

October 18th

Freakish – Season 2 Premiere

  • Streams: Hulu
  • Starring: Leo Howard, Liza Koshy, Adam Hicks, Aislinn Paul
  • About: This horror series continues for its second season on Hulu as a new group of survivors joins the those taking refuge from the deadly mist outside that turns people to zombies.

October 22nd

The Walking Dead – Season 8 Premiere

  • Airs: AMC, Sundays 9 PM EST
  • Starring: Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Lauren Cohan, Chandler Riggs, Danai Gurira
  • About: The show returns for Season 8 and promises to bring “all out war” as Alexandria, the Hilltop and the Kingdom take on Negan and his Saviors.

October 27th

Stranger Things – Season 2 Premiere

  • Streams: Netflix
  • Starring: Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo
  • About: This sci fi / horror 80’s throwback series returns for its second season and explores the larger mystery of Will’s disappearance.
