This Week in Sci Fi TV: Star Trek Discovery Casts its Lead, and 8 More Things to Know

By | December 17, 2016

star-trek-discovery-shipCasting News: We have been getting plenty of casting news of late for the upcoming Star Trek: Discovery series over the past few weeks, but a big announcement just hit for that show. The lead character–who will not be the captain of the Discovery but a Lt. Commander onboard the ship–has been cast. The actress who will play this character is someone genre fans are familiar with, and I would suggest skipping the next paragraph if you don’t want a potential spoiler for The Walking Dead.

Sonequa Martin-Green, who plays Sasha on TWD, has been cast as Lt. Commander Rainsford. Whether that means she will be exiting the zombie-pocalypse series remains to be seen and allegedly she will continue on in her role on that show. But considering TWD’s penchant for major-character body counts, I would not count on her sticking around too long on that show.

Also announced this week, Chris Obi and Mary Chieffo have signed on to the show to play Klingons. According to Deadline Hollywood, “Obi will play T’Kuvma, the Klingon leader seeking to unite the Klingon houses” and “Chieffo will portray L’Rell, the Battle Deck Commander of the Klingon ship.”
