Your Guide To Sci-Fi And Fantasy TV Premieres, Returns And Finales In August

The Summer season is winding down, but August still has several premieres and returns to offer as well as quite a number of season finales. Oh yeah, there’s also some shark movie that will be on Syfy in August. Note that there is still no release date for the second season Cinemax’s Outcast (which bowed internationally back in April), but latest word is that it will hit the schedule in the fourth quarter of this year. August 4th

Voltron: Legendary Defender – Season 3 Premiere

  • Streaming: Netflix
  • Starring: Steven Yeun, Jeremy Shada, Bex Taylor-Klaus, Josh Keaton, Tyler Labine
  • About: Netflix’s reboot of the 80’s anime Voltron (known as Beast King GoLion in Japan) continues into its third season. This season will only comprise seven episodes (all available for streaming on August 4th), but no need to fret because the fourth season is right on its heals with an October premiere planned.

August 6th

Sharknado 5: Global Swarming – Movie Premiere

  • Airs: Syfy, Saturday 8 PM EST
  • Starring: Ian Ziering, Tara Reid, Ryan Newman, Cassie Scerbo
  • About: Here’s what Syfy.com has for the film summary, and I’m not sure what I can add to that: “Sharknado is back and ready to make America bait again. Fabio is the Pope. Charo is the Queen of England. Bret Michaels is … himself. Prepare for the storm to go international”.

August 18th

The Defenders – Series Premiere

  • Streaming: Netflix
  • Starring: Charlie Cox, Krysten Ritter, Mike Colter, Finn Jones, Sigourney Weaver
  • About: This series will deliver the long-awaited team-up between the four superheroes that have already appeared in their own solo series on Netflix: Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist (plus the Punisher and Electra will be stopping by as well).

August 20th

The Last Ship – Season 4 Premiere

  • Airs: TNT, Sundays 9 PM EST
  • Starring: Eric Dane, Marissa Neitling, Adam Baldwin, Charles Parnell
  • About: As the fourth season of this virus-outbreak series begins, Captain Chandler has retreated from his former duties, claiming he is “done playing the hero”, and lives with his family in a small town in Greece. Meanwhile, the virus that had wiped out most of humanity has now jumped to the plant kingdom and threatens to bring worldwide famine.

August 25th

Death Note – Movie Premiere

  • Streaming: Netflix
  • Starring: Nat Wolff, Margaret Qualley, Keith Stanfield, Paul Nakauchi, Willem Dafoe
  • About: Based on the Anime of the same name, a young man finds a mysterious book that allows him to kill anybody who’s name he writes in it. He decides to use it to kill criminals and others who deserve to die, but finds there are consequences to playing the role of the angel of justice.

The Tick – Series Premiere

  • Streaming: Amazon
  • Starring: Peter Serafinowicz, Griffin Newman, Valorie Curry, Brendan Hines, Jackie Earle Haley
  • About: Based on the Ben Edlund comic book of the same name, the bumbling superhero known as the Tick, along with his faithful partner/sidekick Arthur, return to television in this reboot of the beloved superhero parody. You can watch the pilot episode over at Amazon here.

  • August 12: BBC America’s Orphan Black has its Series Finale
  • August 14: Freeform’s Shadowhunters has its 2nd Season Finale
  • August 14: Freeform’s Stitchers has its 3rd Season Finale
  • August 24: Spike’s The Mist has its 1st Season Finale
  • August 25: Syfy’s Dark Matter has its 3rd Season Finale
  • August 25: Syfy’s Wynonna Earp has its 2nd Season Finale
  • August 27: HBO’s Game of Thrones has its 7th Season Finale
  • August 28: AMC’s Preacher has its 2nd Season Finale
