Your Guide To Sci-Fi And Fantasy TV Premieres And Returns In September

September is here which means that the Fall season is upon us. This month kicks off with some early premieres and then things really start to ramp up later in the month. Many are anticipating the return of Star Trek to television (which happens on September 24th), but there are plenty more shows debuting / returning beyond that. Below is a rundown of the September entries and you can see the full Fall schedule here.

September 5th

American Horror Story – Season 7 Premiere

  • Airs: FX, Tuesdays 10 PM EST
  • Starring: Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Cheyenne Jackson, Billie Lourd
  • About: This season-long horror series returns for its seventh year with a trueAmerican Horror Story theme: the 2016 election. According to series co-creator Ryan Murphy “the election is the jumping-off point of the show, but it’s really about the rise of a cult of personality”.

September 10th

Fear the Walking Dead – Returns from Hiatus

  • Air: AMC, Sundays 9 PM EST
  • Starring: Kim Dickens, Cliff Curtis, Frank Dillane, Alycia Debnam Carey
  • About: This Walking Dead prequel series returns to wrap up its third season and continue the story of the survivors trying to find their way at the beginning of the zombie-pocalypse.

The Orville – Series Premiere

  • Airs: FOX, Thursdays 9 PM EST
  • Starring: Seth MacFarlane, Adrianne Palicki, Scott Grimes, Peter Macon
  • About: This Galaxy Quest-type series from Seth MacFarlane follows the crew of the “mid-level exploratory spaceship” The Orville as it sets off into the galaxy for mundane adventures in the 25th century. Note that the show is getting an early premiere on September 10th at 8 PM EST before taking up its regular timeslot on Thursdays at 9 PM EST

Outlander – Season 3 Premiere

  • Airs: Starz, Sundays 9 PM EST
  • Starring: Caitriona Balfe, Sam Heughan, Tobias Menzies, Gary Lewis, Graham McTavish
  • About: Season 3 of Outlander picks up with Jamie and Claire, separated by continents and centuries, as they attempt life apart, each haunted by their lost love. Can they find their way back to each other?

September 20th

Channel Zero – Season 2 Premiere

  • Airs: Syfy, Wednesdays 9 PM EST
  • Starring: Amy Forsyth, John Carroll Lynch, Aisha Dee, Kyla Kane
  • About: This season-long horror anthology based on the internet “creepypasta” stories returns for its second year to give us the “No-End House” tale about a house filled with terrifying rooms that never seem to end.

The Good Place – Season 2 Premiere

  • Airs: NBC, Thursdays 8:30 PM EST
  • Starring: Ted Danson, Kristen Bell, Jameela Jamil, William Jackson Harper
  • About: In this sitcom, a woman dies and goes to the “good place” but realizes there may have been a mistake because she was not a very good person in life. Note that this show has a special premiere on September 20th before moving back to its regular Thursday timeslot.

September 21st

Gotham – Season 4 Premiere

  • Airs: FOX, Thursdays 8 PM EST
  • Starring: Ben McKenzie, Sean Pertwee, Robin Lord Taylor, Zabryna Guevara, Erin Richards
  • About: The story about how Bruce Wayne becomes Batman and establishes his relationship with Jim Gordon continues into its fourth year.

September 24th

Star Trek: Discovery – Series Premiere

  • Streaming: CBS All Access
  • Starring: Sonequa Martin-Green, Doug Jones, Michelle Yeoh, Anthony Rapp
  • About: Star Trek returns to television as this show follows the adventures of the starship Discovery and focuses on the Lieutenant Commander Michael Burnham played by Sonequa Martin-Green. Note that it will debut on CBS on September 24th then be available on that network’s streaming service CBS All Access.

September 29th

MacGyver – Season 2 Premiere

  • Airs: CBS, Fridays 8 PM EST
  • Starring: Lucas Till, George Eads, Sandrine Holt, Tristin Mays
  • About: This spy fi reboot of the 80’s series returns to continue the adventures of a younger (20-something) MacGyver setting up an organization designed to solve problems and prevent disasters.

The Inhumans – Series Premiere

  • Airs: ABC, Fridays 9 PM EST
  • Starring: Anson Mount, Serinda Swan, Iwan Rheon, Ken Leung
  • About: Based on the Marvel comic books, this series will focus on the “royal family” of Inhumans. Note that the first two episodes of this showing are debuting in IMAX theaters for a limited run starting on September 1st.

The Exorcist – Season 2 Premiere

  • Airs: FOX, Fridays 9 PM EST
  • Starring: Alfonso Herrera, Ben Daniels, Kurt Egyiawan, Brianna Hildebrand
  • About: This sequel series to the original 1973 movie returns as Father Tomas Ortega and Father Marcus Keane continue to do battle with the evil that is taking possession of human souls
