BBC America announced this week the renewal of their new series Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, based on the Douglas Adams books. It will be getting a ten episode second season, up from the eight episodes it had in its first year. The news comes as a bit of a surprise based on the fact that the show has barely registered in the ratings thus far (it is currently at only a 0.09 average based on the overnights for the 18-49 demographic), but BBC America has a partnership with Netflix on the show where the streaming service distributes Dirk Gently outside of the U.S. and Canada. I previously had this one as trending toward cancellation, but it’s hard to gauge the status of these low-rated cable shows when international partnerships are involved, and this one likely has drawn better viewership in Britain. For now, fans should be happy that it is returning for a second year, and the Netflix partnership just may be enough to keep it around for a bit longer after that.
