Sci Fi TV Schedules: Preliminary Fall 2016 Schedule for the Broadcast Network Sci Fi / Fantasy Shows

NBC’s Timeless from Eric Kripke

The broadcast networks had their upfront presentations with the sponsors this week and have unveiled their schedules for the 2016-17 season.  I have compiled all that information below to give a preliminary look at where the sci fi / fantasy entries will land.  Note that this is not set in stone yet, and I expected some shifting of the schedule before the season actually begins in Fall.  But this gives you a good idea of when the new and returning shows will air and I will be posting updates at this site when changes are announced.

My initial thoughts on the schedule is that it looks kind of light on genre entries, but then the cable shows have not been added yet and the broadcast nets have only trimmed a little bit back on their sci fi offerings (with quite a few held to mid-season).  Supergirl should do a good job of revitalizing Mondays for The CW, though I expect it to lag behind the numbers for The Flash and Arrow (as does the network).  ABC is doing Agents of SHIELD no favors by moving it to the Tuesday 10 PM EST hour that got Forever cancelled last season, but I expect that it is just their to air out its fourth season before getting packed off to syndication.  I definitely don’t like the scheduling of MacGyver or The Exorcist on Fridays.  That’s a tough night for any show, and all that much worse for new shows trying to get their footing.  The biggest winner in the scheduling battle among genre shows is NBC’s Timeless which gets the Monday lead-out hour from ratings juggernaut The Voice.  Series creator Eric Kripke has to hope that show does better in the timeslot than his Revolution did back in the 2012-13 season, though.  You can read more of my thoughts on the networks scheduling at each of these links: ABC, CBS, The CW, FOX, NBC.  And you can read more about the new series pickups (and see the trailers) at this link.  And note that the new Star Trek series is set to debut on CBS in early 2017, but it will then shift to their new streaming service CBS All Access.

Here is the preliminary schedule for Fall 2016.  Links are to the show pages on our partner site Cancelled Sci Fi where you can read more about the shows and see season to date ratings results.  The pages for the new shows have not been set up yet, but those will be coming in the next month or so.
